Talk Goals

  1. What should I talk about?
  2. What should my deck look like?
  3. How can I be comfortable during my talk?

So, you're giving a talk?

  • What do I want attendees to walk away with?
  • Your talk is a narrative
  • Plan your talk

So, you're giving a talk?

Things to remember
  • Being nervous is okay
  • Focus on the story you're telling
  • Make it yours

But what about my slides?

Emphasize & accentuate the narrative

2-3 minutes per slide

But what about my slides?

Its easy to write slides that are walls of text. But remember that as soon as you put something in front of your audience they'll start reading it. And in general, people are very bad at focusing on two things at once. So guess what, you just lost your audience and now need to pull them back into your talk.

  1. 95% of you just lost the thread of this talk
  2. But that's okay, that was the point.

So remember, this is an example of a poorly constructed slide.

But what about my slides?

With text, less is more

Be careful with visuals

Stick to your narrative

You want me to stand up there and speak?

Make sure you've timed yourself

Know your transitions

Know your material

You want me to stand up there and speak?

A few things to consider:
  • Questions at the end or interspersed?
  • Memorize or use notes?
  • How can I keep the audience engaged?
